101 Mobility Makes Entrepreneur’s 2017 Franchise 500 List

101 Mobility is honored to have made Entrepreneur’s 38th annual Franchise 500 ranking list.

Entrepreneur uses a formula to rank the top 500 franchises each year based on factors such as system size, growth, and financial strength and stability. The rankings encompassed the top 500 franchise businesses out of a possible 988. According to Entrepreneur’s guidelines listed on entrepreneur.com,

“To be eligible for our ranking, a franchisor must have had a minimum of 10 units open and operating as of July 31, 2016, with at least one franchise located in either the U.S. or Canada. The company must also be seeking new franchisees in the U.S. or Canada. It could not be in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Once eligible, each company was then scored based on more than 150 data points, and the 500 companies with the highest cumulative scores became the Franchise 500.”

Dave Pazgan on “Fostering a Caring Culture that Filters Down to the Franchise System”

Dave Pazgan, CEO and Co-Founder of 101 Mobility, recently wrote an article that was featured in Franchising World Magazine. In the article, he focuses on how Franchisors can foster a caring culture that will also filter down throughout the franchise system. According to Pazgan, “When franchisors care about the people around them and their customers, that enthusiasm for doing good will bleed over into other aspect of the company.”

Inc. 5000

101 Mobility Franchise Owners and Corporate Office Staff Members

Such is certainly the case with 101 Mobility, a company whose motto, “Do well by doing good”, is frequently heard around their corporate office. According to Pazgan, “101 Mobility was founded on the principle that by doing good, the company will also do well… As employees become more invested in the company, those acts of caring will perpetuate themselves and weed out the employees who don’t have the same level of passion.”

Connor Bode's Home Makeover

101 Mobility North Georgia owners, Garol Orr and Wayne Offenhauer, donate a ceiling lift to a local boy in need

To live out this mantra on a corporate level, 101 Mobility dedicates a portion of its annual marketing budget to philanthropic opportunities in the community. Within the franchise organization, there is a sense of pride whenever a location donates a product or service, or otherwise helps someone in need. Pazgan recommends that franchisors foster this type of pride by setting up “a reporting system for franchisees to share their philanthropic work and for that work to be shared in newsletters and blog posts on the company’s website.”

Pazgan summarizes the concept, “A culture of caring is a culture that supports employees’ ideas, franchisee contributions and team effort… Find a path for your company to communicate empathy across its system and for franchisees to put their trust in company culture”.

With their combined backgrounds, the team discovered a void in the industry that they set out to fill.

This background lends them a great depth of insight into the industry as well as their customers’ needs.  They decided to help fill this void by opening franchise business locations with proven processes that were focused around helping individuals with medical or special needs stay comfortably in their homes.

In 2015, they opened their first franchise called Caring Senior Services of Columbia, which allows provides in-home caregivers to elderly and disabled individuals.

In early 2016, they purchased Caliber Care + Transport, a non-emergency medical transportation company that helps individuals who require wheelchairs or the use of a stretcher get from their homes to doctors’ appointments or other events.

Why 101 Mobility?

In late 2016, the team made the next logical investment – a 101 Mobility franchise. With the addition of a full-service access and mobility equipment company, the team could now further assist their clients. Between their businesses, they could provide home-care to individuals and help them leave their homes as needed, and now they could make those homes safer and more comfortable with products such as stair lifts, ramps, and patient lifts.

All four of their businesses focus around their core value of providing compassionate care to patients in their homes. They strive to build relationships in their local communities to help identify folks in need of their services, and look forward to building and growing our new franchise opportunities to complete the compassionate circle of care.

Why 101 Mobility?

Several years ago, the Thomases and Mr. Pilkerton set out in search of business opportunities that would make use of their combined experience in healthcare marketing, sales, customer service, and business operations. They discovered 101 Mobility, and were immediately intrigued. Not only would the business allow the trio to capitalize on their individual skill sets, they could do so in an industry where they would be able to drastically improve customers’ lives. They saw that their beloved fellow Hoosiers were aging rapidly, and there was a void where they had few to no choices for solutions to help them recover from surgeries at home or age in place. Drawn by the desire to provide options to those looking for alternatives to nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, they determined that a 101 Mobility franchise was the natural choice and eagerly applied for their very own franchise.

Set to open in October, 2016, the 101 Mobility Indianapolis team look forward to providing top-quality mobility solutions with expert advice from their office centrally-located on Bash Street in Indianapolis.

101 Mobility of Wilmington’s Leigh Kelly: Committed to Caring

“If you don’t love what you do, go do something else.” This phrase is prominently displayed around 101 Mobility’s Home Office in Wilmington, NC, and with good reason. At the heart of the company is a genuine passion for helping people, and this passion is apparent in each and every employee.  Leigh Kelly is one such employee, who has been with the company since its inception. We interviewed her to learn more about her relationship with the company and to gain insights into her astounding success.

A Brief History

101 Mobility was founded in 2008 by two friends, Keith Barnhardt and Luke Sampson, who had a passion for helping people. They noticed the need for accessibility and mobility equipment in their coastal hometown in North Carolina, and decided to provide a solution. The company has since spread, and now boasts over 50 franchise locations across the country. That same Wilmington office now serves as the home office, providing support and training to each and every franchise, but also operates a small branch of its own to continue to serve the local community.

Back when the business was brand new, Barnhardt and Sampson operated as a two-man team to get the business up and running. While out with customers, they realized that they needed somebody to stay in the office and answer the phones – enter Leigh Kelly.

Fostering Growth

Prior to working with 101 Mobility, Ms. Kelly was an entrepreneur herself and owned a clothing boutique in Wilmington. Unfortunately, shortly after the tragic events of September 11th, the atmosphere changed for the worse and her boutique was broken into on multiple occasions. Coupled with the rise of “fast fashion”, she found herself no longer loving what she was doing and decided to do something else. Her brother-in-law, Keith Barnhardt, provided her with the opportunity to enter an entirely new industry, and she jumped at the chance.

Kelly began as the office manager and quickly fell in love with the business. She learned the ins and outs of the products and solutions, and began taking on more of their account management duties. Before long, she was making good use of her prior sales experience and forayed into retail sales over the phone.

By 2012, 101 Mobility had sold a handful of franchises in different states, but still had a very limited service area. To fill the gaps, Kelly worked with contractors in areas where the company did not yet have a presence to ship, install, and service equipment.

101 Mobility continued to franchise, creating the strong network of coverage present today. Barnhardt and Sampson developed a full-fledged “Corporate Office” in Wilmington to train and support the new franchise owners, stepping out of their sales roles and into management. Ms. Kelly again stepped up and became the Wilmington office branch manager, in charge of sales and operations within the local market.

Loving What You Do

I joined Ms. Kelly on a follow-up appointment at a customer’s home. The client’s husband was in the hospital and would not be able to walk up the large stair case to get inside their stilted beach house once he was released. Kelly had previously met with the client and her daughter to discuss a vertical platform lift, but the two had some reservations about the appearance of the lift, and whether it would be accepted by their neighborhood’s HOA. She answered each question thoroughly and passionately, brought samples of the lift material for them to see and feel, and even offered to add extra railings and lattice around the unit so that it would blend with the deck next to it.

Before leaving, the client’s daughter smiled and looked at Ms. Kelly, telling her, “we’ve been researching this a lot, and looked at a lot of VPL’s online. I’ve even found some that are less expensive than what you quoted, but you are the reason that we are going with 101 Mobility. I trust you, and I believe you that if we need anything down the road, we’ll be able to call you and you’ll continue to help us.”

 Giving Back

When Ms. Kelly isn’t working, which is rare considering she provides her personal cell phone number to her clients

Ms. Kelly accepting an award from the Harbor Island Garden Club

Ms. Kelly accepting an award from the Harbor Island Garden Club

and invites them to call or text her any time, day or night, she is highly active in her local community. She is actively engaged with the Harbor Island Garden Club, a local volunteer organization which works to beautify the community, as first Vice President.

Ms. Kelly is also a Committee Member for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the Cape Fear Heart Ball, a Group Member for the Healthcare Marketers Network, Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Wilmington Cape Fear Home Builder’s Association, and North Carolina Home Builder’s Association.

While not occupied with these organizations, she volunteers with local organizations and events such as Step Up for Soldiers, the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla, and Canines & Couture.

As a Certified Aging in Place Specialist, Ms. Kelly is not only a knowledgeable asset to the team but a truly caring individual dedicated to helping those in and around her community and truly exemplifies 101 Mobility’s commitment to caring.

101 Mobility Opens First Franchise Location in Maine

Mat Soch – Scarborough, ME

Mat Soch, 101 Mobility Maine

Mat Soch, Owner and Operator of 101 Mobility’s new Maine Location

Mat Soch recently opened 101 Mobility’s first location in Maine. Situated in Scarborough, ME, this location services much of the state of Maine as well as parts of New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

With a long history in the healthcare industry, Soch’s own professional journey mirrors the experience of the average 101 Mobility customer. He began his career in pharmaceutical sales, then later worked in operating room-based medical device sales.

After surgery, many patients would require home modifications in order to remain in their homes, where his current role with 101 Mobility comes in. His experience provides him with valuable insights into the customers’ journey, what they are going through, and what they can expect next, allowing him to provide the best long-term solutions for each customer.

Previous Experience

Soch began his professional career as a pharmaceutical sales manager, working closely with Urologists, Cardiologists, and Endocrinologists. He worked to educate customers on pharmaceutical products, including proper clinical usage by disease state, clinical support, and education. Through his experience, he gained a great deal of knowledge in degenerative diseases and the effects they have on those who are diagnosed.

Following five years in the pharmaceutical sales industry, Soch shifted to a position in medical device sales. There, he worked directly with various surgeons and even spent time in the operating room with hip and knee surgeries, spinal surgeries, trauma patients, surgical oncology and transplants. He gained an understanding of the various risk factors for the patients, as well as the journey that brought them to that moment and what their lives will be like when they return back home.

Many would require major modifications to their homes post-op to be able to live comfortably, independently, and safely. Now, as a 101 Mobility Franchise owner, Soch gets to help those individuals complete the journey and return home.

Joining 101 Mobility

Soch began researching small businesses and franchise opportunities in the area that could build on his background in the medical sales industry, while allowing him to make a positive impact on peoples’ lives. He now gets to help customers who are ready to return home after life-altering events.

His combined experience allows him a deeper understanding of who the customers are and what they have gone through, as well as what they might expect to face further down the road allowing him to connect on a deeper level. According to Soch,

“Now I can explain to my 5-year-old, ‘today we helped people’ and she can understand and appreciate what we do.”

Why 101 Mobility?

When asked why he chose a 101 Mobility franchise business over any other existing business or simply opening his own, he stated that “after researching, 101 Mobility fulfilled the most items on my check list.” Among those check-boxes are

“an impressive franchise model, spectacular interactions with brokers and home office staff, and even impressive interactions with vendors.”

The business fit with his relevant experience, it was the size he was looking for, and he felt that he was joining something great “right at the beginning of the wave”.

Soch spent over nine months talking to 101 Mobility’s franchise broker before moving forward, and adds that “Mike is one of the main factors that convinced me to choose 101 Mobility – not once over those nine months did he get frustrated with me or give me an attitude.”

Over the past month that Soch’s Portland, ME franchise has been open, he proudly states

“I’ve partnered with a group of people in the home office that I rely on, and all of my success can be traced back to their support.”

101 Mobility Franchise: How to “Love What You Do”

101 Mobility’s President, Dave Pazgan, has a saying: “If you don’t love what you do, do something else.”

Not only does our company incorporate this saying in our Core Values, but it is also something that we practice every day. That’s because, for many of us, we truly love what we do.

As you probably have discovered, there’s no shortage of franchise opportunities out there. From pest removal to chicken wings, there’s likely not a service or product that you could think of that hasn’t been spun off into a franchise system.

Yet at the end of the day, we’re sure you will be asking yourself, “Do I love what I do?”

At 101 Mobility, we feel confident that you will. As one of the nation’s leading providers of mobility and accessibility products, owning a franchise means you are directly helping veterans, people with disabilities, as well as caregivers find independence. It’s an opportunity to truly have an impact on someone’s life and watch their excitement unfold before your eyes.

That’s not a feeling you’ll likely get from owning a fast food franchise.

Although we cater to a need in a booming market, many of our franchisees cite giving back to the community as a major driving force behind their decision to join the 101 Mobility family. Deciding to be their own boss was the easy part; the hard part was finding the right franchise where they could really love what they do for a living.

Here is what a few of our franchisees had to say about running their own 101 Mobility franchise:

“You’ve got to have a higher calling to get out of bed in the morning. For me, it was talking to our veteran clients and being able to give back to them with the business. With this franchise, I get to hire veterans and serve veterans at the same time. Overall, it’s very rewarding.”
Brian Hawkins, 101 Mobility in Phoenix

“I’m always thinking of ways to improve service quality, generate more leads, and build a better business. That’s why the passion better be there. You’ve got to love what you do.”
– Jeff Franklin, 101 Mobility in Cleveland, Columbus, and Southeast Michigan

“Helping a veteran is always a great feeling! I’d say whenever we go out of our way to help someone (they) recognize it.”
Donna Dziewik, 101 Mobility in Milwaukee

“(What) is noteworthy is the opportunity to be a part of something that’s exponentially bigger than we are. To be a part of something that’s making a huge difference in the lives of people in need. To do a little thing that joins with lots of other little things to accomplish something huge. Being part of a community. Working together with one mind and purpose. And that’s really what 101 Mobility of San Diego is all about.”
Kindra French, 101 Mobility of San Diego

“I used to work on Wall Street where I just helped other businesses. Giving back has always been important, but now that I have children it means much more. I am setting an example for them. Everything we do at our local Long Island 101 Mobility franchised business is with the intention of helping an individual and improving their quality of life.”
John Michielini, 101 Mobility in Long Island

101 Mobility Honored with 2016 MAX! Awards by the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association

MAX! Awards 2016 logo

101 Mobility receives awards for “Best Social Media,” “Best Special Project,” and “Community Involvement.”

WILMINGTON, NC – On Thursday, February 4, the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association (WCFHBA) awarded 101 Mobility with MAX! Awards for “Best Social Media for a Company,” “Best Special Project,” and “Community Involvement” at their annual Marketing Achievement Excellence (MAX!) Awards and Gala at Union Station’s Wendell Daniels Ballroom, on the campus of Cape Fear Community College.

101 Mobility is a leading provider of mobility and accessibility solutions throughout the nation. Based out of Wilmington, North Carolina, the mobility provider has over 110 franchise territories that offer customers a “one stop shop” for products such as stair lifts, ramps, and auto lifts.

“Receiving these awards from the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association means a lot to our company, as well as to our marketing department,” said Brian Havens, Technical Writer for 101 Mobility. “It gives our team a sense of pride for all of the hard work that was put into these various projects.”

101 Mobility received the award for “Best Social Media for a Company” for the work on their national blog, which features stories and information targeted to senior citizens, caregivers, and the disability community.

The award for “Best Special Project” was received due to a donation story from Justin Murdock, owner of 101 Mobility in Lexington. Looking for marketing growth opportunities in a new territory, Murdock decided to donate a stair lift to a Kentucky entrepreneur in need. With the lift in place, Martha Calie, a young woman living with cerebral palsy, is now able to expand her at-home business, “Shoot for the Moon Animal Treats.”

A “Community Service” plaque was also given to 101 Mobility for their contribution at the annual Codington Parade. Every year, 101 Mobility hand-makes Halloween costumes for Codington Elementary’s special needs class, decorating wheelchairs and strollers in unique designs chosen by the students themselves. Other classes then line the driveway of the school, cheering on the students as they showcase their outfits one-by-one.

The MAX! Awards are presented by the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association, a nearly 1,000 member-firm trade association that provides services to members which enhance their success and stability. The largest trade association in eastern North Carolina, the Association serves as the voice of the building and development industries and strives to advance professionalism and promote community involvement. The WCFHBA is recognized as a positive influential force for responsible growth by protecting property rights and the privilege of home ownership.

Franchise Gator Declares 101 Mobility A “Top 10” Franchise Opportunity

101 Mobility receives designation as “Top 10” franchise

WILMINGTON, NC – February 2, 2016 – Franchise Gator has named 101 Mobility as a “Top 100” and “Top 10” franchise for 2016. The online franchise directory developed the list as a way for prospective franchisees to identify opportunities with strong growth potential that are also affordable investments for the average franchise buyer.

101 Mobility is a leading provider of mobility and accessibility solutions throughout the nation. With over 110 franchise territories, the company offers a wide range of products – such as stair lifts and wheelchair lifts – to allow seniors and those with disabilities to safely access their homes.

Mike Gardner, Manager of Franchise Development for the company, said of the designation, “It is wonderful! It definitely gives me a sense of pride and proves that we are all doing a job, not just well done, but above and beyond well done.”

Franchise Gator ranked 101 Mobility as the #10 franchise opportunity overall. The ranking is developed using a formula based on several criteria including financial stability, growth, sustainability, profitability, transparency, and franchisee satisfaction.

Just one week prior, Franchise Gator also announced 101 Mobility as a “Fastest Growing Franchise,” making this the second award for 101 Mobility during the start of the new year.

Gardner attributes 101 Mobility’s expansive growth to being recognized as the industry leader, exceptional national branding, explosive market growth opportunity, as well as powerful success stories coming from existing franchise owners.

“My expectations for 2016 are nothing less than the year we just came out of. I see us selling the rest of our key markets, bringing in more owners from smaller market territories, and even entering Canada.”
